Shikoku in april - by train 2011/3/1 01:29
we're traveling to japan in april, and want to include shikoku island in our trip for 2-3 days. We will not (or are hoping not) to rent a car, as we will have the JR train pass. we're hoping to spend some time on naoshima island, and climb Kompirasan, which i know we can do through our passes...

...however, I would also love to visit the iya valley but from what i read it seems a little difficult to get around in without a car. Is it possible to get around, at least partially without one? I've read about some little tourist buses that go around to see the vine bridges, and wondering if they are worth it.

Any thoughts?? thank you!

You can indeed travel on JR to Kotohira for your hike up Kompira-san but it is still 15 min walk from the JR station to the foot of the mt. Coming from Takamatsu, the private Kotoden Rail brings you a bit closer.

Sightseeing bus tour of Iya Valley starts from Awa Ikeda and includes the touristy Iya Kazura-bashi vine bridge.

Unfortunately it doesn't go to the more beautiful Oku Iya Niju Kazura-bashi, a pair of vine bridges best explored if you have your own wheels.

I don't think the JR rail pass is good for travel on Naoshima. Either you take a ferry from Takamatsu in Shikoku or Uno in mainland Honshu.

On Naoshima, the most common transportation is the mini-bus with a flat fare of 100 yen for each trip.
