What time to line up on Jan. 2?

Hi! I would really like to see the emperor during the greeting on jan. 2? what time should i be there to line up so that i`m assured of a front spot? thanks! and how do I get to the specific gate for the entrance? thanks! :)

I believe that the inner area of the palace is open continuously. Most people will leave after each appearance. So, if you arrive shortly after an appearance you should then be able to secure a good spot for the next appearance. Appearances are scheduled for 10:10, 11:00, 11:50, 12:40, 13:30 and 14:20.
