Travel from Narita airport to Naoshima

We arrive at Tokyo Narita Airport on QANTAS flight landing at 6.05am. How can we travel to Naoshima island that day? We plan to buy a JR rail pass, so will need to take trains on which the pass is valid.

If you go directly from Narita Airport, it will involve a LONG train journey of almost 7 hrs with 2-3 transfers to reach the port of Uno before taking a 20 min ferry across to Naoshima.

The main concern is that JR service centres in Narita do not open so early in the morning meaning you can't activate your rail pass right after arrival. You have to wait till 8.15 to do it at the centre located in Terminal 1.

I was in Naoshima last May and it was amazing! Stayed for two nights.

There are direct trains (e.g, Shinkanzen Nozomi) from Tokyo to Okayama. The travel time is approx. 3.5 hours. Judging by tour arrival time, it appears that you can catch a 9:10 a.m. train from Toyko Station and arrive in Okayama at around 12:30 p.m. ( You can check the train schedules at www.hyperdia,com)

Once in Okayama, you will need to take a ferry to Naoshima from Uno. This link will help you with info about the ferries: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5476.html?aFROM=5475_5700. Uno is a short train journey from Okayama.
