Tokyo to Kumomoto? best way? 2012/2/14 16:31
whats the best way to get to Kumomoto from Tokyo using a rail pass? i was thinking a night train so i could save on two nights accommodations. but it doesnt seem like there is anything direct where i could really sleep with out many transfers.and i will only be there for 3 days and then going back to Osaka. is there anyway where i dont have to waste 2 days of travel? or make use of the travel and see things along the way? any ideas would be great.thanks.

I assume you mean Kumamoto.

You can access Kumamoto relatively easily from Osaka, there are a few direct trains that you can use (Sakura) that go from Shin-Osaka to Kumamoto in 3.5 hours.

If you do wish to use a night train, and there is availability by the time you book, then you can catch the Sunrise Seto from Tokyo to Okayama and then catch a morning Sakura train direct from Okayama to Kumamoto, usually arriving at Kumamoto around 10am.

Alternatively, you can go from Tokyo all the way to Kumamoto during the day with just one change at Shin-Osaka, if you leave Tokyo at 6:30am you arrive at Kumamoto at around 1:30pm which seems pretty easy to me.

How many days are you in Japan for? Where else do you plan to see? Other places along the way apart from Osaka are Okayama, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka.

I'd just be inclined to split up your journey to get there, either Osaka on the way and Hiroshima on the way back or something along those lines.

Enjoy your trip!

Or you could fly Tokyo (Haneda) - Kumamoto direct with either SkyMark AIrlines (~USD$100) or SolarSeed (Y10,000)
and save yourself precious travelling time.

You could then validate your JR Pass after your stay in Kumamoto (at JR Kumamoto Station) and start travelling on your pass from then, stopping at the various places/sights on the way back from Kumamoto.

CGH, sorry I assumed from your post you'll be staying in Kumamoto for those 3days - which to me is a complete waste/sacrifice of 3days travel on your JR Pass not to mention basically a whole days train travel (~7hours) just to get there! that's why I suggested the cheap flight first followed by validation of JR PAss after Kumamoto.
