Ebino kogen - bus connection from Kagoshima 2012/4/1 02:06
I plan to spend 2 days trekking on the Ebino plateau, and to stay in a hotel in Ebino Kogen from 23-25 April. I will arrive in Kagoshima Airport on Monday morning and have read that 7 buses a day leave from there to Kirishima, and another bus connects to Ebino Kogen. Does anyone have a schedule for these buses, or know a quicker / more convenient / cheaper way to get to Ebino Kogen and back?
I would like to get back to Kagoshima around lunchtime on the 25 April.
Thanks in advance for any advice

Conni,

I am not familiar with the public transportation in this area, and my knowledge is just limited to what I googled, but I found following links.

From Kagoshima airport to Kirishima Iwasaki Hotel

http://www.koj-ab.co.jp/images/access/timetable/kirishima.pdf

From Kirishima Iwasaki hotel to Ebino Kogen

http://www.city-kirishima.jp/modules/xfsection/download.php?fileid=139...

Therefore, the schedule should be:

Kagoshima Airport i‹ó`j 9:40 10:22 Kirishima Iwasaki hotel i–¶“‡‚¢‚킳‚«ƒzƒeƒ‹j10:48 11:22 Ebino Kogen i‚¦‚Ñ‚Ì‚Œ´j. Another bus from Iwasaki hotel leaves at 8:48, and thus you would not be able to get it.

From Ebino Kogen, you should take 13:30 or 14:50 bus to Iwasaki hotel and change bus to Kagoshima city. Also you can enjoy onsen at the hotel.

Hope this helps. Enjoy your trip to Kagoshima!

Thank you so much, this is very helpful! For the way back, is there also an early morning connection so I could arrive in Kagoshima at lunchtime?

Unfortunately Ebino Kogen doesn't have very good public transportation options. Buses to Ebino Kogen only run in the mornings, while buses from Ebino Kogen only run in the afternoons. So 13:30 ends up being the first connection of the day. If you need to be back in the morning then your options are to take a taxi or rent a car. See this page for more info:

Re: Ebino kogen - bus connection from Kagoshima 2012/4/1 17:01
I see - does anyone know how much a taxi Ebino kogen - Kagoshima would cost?

Basically, I arrive in Kagoshima in the morning on 23 April and leave again on the evening of 25 April. I wanted to trek on Ebino Plateau for a day and a half, and visit Ibusuki on the last half day. Maybe it would better the other way around - visit Ibusuki in the morning on 23/4, then travel to Ebino Kogen, and leave Ebino Kogen in the afternoon on 25/4 (I would need to be in Kagoshima 7pm).
Any thoughts if this would be possible?

Hi Conny,

let me report about my experiences. I have visited Ebino Kogen in October last year by public transports. I accommodated in Kagoshima and rode the first commuter train to Kirishima Jingu Station. I reached the station around 7 I think and had enough time to do a site trip to Kirishima Jingu Shrine by Taxi. Unfortunately the entrance shrine was mantled due to restoration works...

The bus bound for Ebino Kogen arrived punctual at 08:13 near the temple area.
My conclusion: If you prepare and check the connection routes carefully you needn't a rental car. By the way, what's referring to hiking in the Ebino Kogen Nationalpark:

The hiking trails up to Shinmoedake as well Mt. Karakuni were still completely closed in October (see: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4629.html). So I used an alternative route to Koshiki-dake. All in one it was a nice 'walk' and had enough time for a cup of coffee in the visitors center before I enter the last bus (15:30), bound for Kirishima Jingu Station.

Good luck!

It will be very expensive if you take taxi to Kagoshima city. Instead, you may take a taxi to Kirishima Iwasaki Hotel.

According to

http://www.taxisite.com/far/

From Ebino Kogenso to Kirishima Iwasaki hotel is 2,640 to 3,310.

From Kirishima Iwasaki hotel, you might take a bus to Kagoshima airport (14 buses a day) or JR Kagoshima Jingu (14 buses a day). From the airport, there are many buses to Kagoshima city.

Basically, I arrive in Kagoshima in the morning on 23 April and leave again on the evening of 25 April.

As far as I know, climbing Karakuni-dake or Oonaminoike is prohibited, therefore the trekking around Ebino Kogen should be in a limited area. I think you should get around in the afternoon on 23rd and in the morning on 24th and then move to Kagoshima city. You can stay Kagoshima city or Ibusuki onsen on 24th. I think it is not practical that you move all the way from Ebino Kogen to Ibusuki (it will take 5 hours or so) and go back to Kagoshima Airport (2.5 hours) in one day.
