Is there anything to do or see near this resort town? i.e. within walking distance (30mins to 1 hour) or driving within (30mins)?
what do people usually do spending an weekend there? other than taking onsen bath?

There is really nothing to do in the immediate surroundings besides checking out one or multiple baths. There are some shops and restaurants, but not many of them.
