Japan is a developed nation. At worst you are most in danger of getting the flu.

It is recommend that you get vaccinated for Japanese Encephalitis if you will stay in rural Japan longer than a month, especially if most of that time will be spent in Okinawa. Otherwise, no special vaccines are required unless your country doesn't routinely vaccinate for Tetanus, Measles, Mumps, and Rubella.

Nothing is recommended for normal travel in Japan from the UK as far as I have been informed, though it never hurts to get a booster on your polio and tetanus shots before travelling abroad. It never hurts to get a dental check-up either.

But if you don't get time, don't worry about it - if you get an injury that needs treating in Japan, the chances are you'll be given another tetanus shot anyway.

Most importantly, make sure you have good and reliable travel insurance before you go. Also a basic first aid kit on hand. And having a few phrases related to medical issues noted down from a phrase book can't hurt either.
