I am visiting Japan 27th dec- 8th Jan.
I am under the impression that the tuna auctions will be closed during this time. Does the Fish market also close for this period, or only on certain days?

Yes, the fish market also closes for a few days over New Year. Here is the calendar through December: http://www.tsukiji-market.or.jp/etc/calendar/2012.htmlThis year, it will be closed on December 31, and then probably from January 1 to 4 of next year before re-opening on the 5th, but I am not completely sure since the exact operation days have not been published yet for 2013.
