Would anyone know if climbing the temples at Yamadera you are able to buy food and drink and perhaps any advice on the best way to enjoy visiting such a beautiful site http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e7940.html

There is no food stall once you start ascending up the temple steps. At the foot of the mt after crossing the bridge from the rail station on your right are some shops and eating places. We went early in the morning and most of them were not open. Only after we came back down that some stalls were open and we could buy drinks and fruits. http://www.yamaderakankou.com/map/

As for enjoying it, take time to look around, explore, and admire the view. If you go in winter, use the available handrails because there can be a bit of ice amongst the snow.

Half a day for Yamadera is enough, the rest of the day can be used to explore Sendai which has quite a no. of interesting and worthwhile sites. On a tight schedule Matsushima can also be squeezed in on the same day, not recommended though.
Note that climbing up the 1000+ steps in Yamadera can be strenuous. There are free walking sticks at the foot of the mt if you need one. Just be sure to arrive early before they are all taken, especially you are visiting during popular autumn foliage season!
