Hakodate - fall colors 2nd wk of Nov 2012/10/24 13:24
According to the Hakodate tourism site, their autumn leaves festival should run through mid-November.

A quick glance at this site makes it appear all of Hokkaido is already at peak:

This site makes it appear the leaves around Hakodate are just beginning to change color:

Would second week of November still be expected to have good peak color around Hakodate this year? As I don't read Japanese, it's difficult to glean much info from the fall colors websites other than the current maps.

Is that still a good time to visit Hakodate regardless?

Thanks.

After looking at it in more detail, you will understand that this is not the case. Hokkaido has a range of elevation of more than 2000 meters, and the climate differs considerable between the various coasts and the interior, as well as between north and south. In the highest elevations of Hokkaido the season is over, while in southern destinations like Hakodate it has barely started.

The site indicates that the leaves are starting to color around Onuma Park, but that they have not yet started to color in Hakodate.

Hakodate is the last place on Hokkaido to see autumn colors. I expect this year's season to peak in early November, and I would not be surprised if some colors survived into mid November.

Thanks, like I said I don't read Japanese so it's kind of difficult for me to look at these sites for detail.

I appreciate that some harder to reach spots on Hokkaido would be better for fall colors, but they won't work out this trip, not to mention other spots will more likely be past peak by the time I'm there.

The Hakodate tourism site had mentioned an autumn leaves festival and it seems like a fine place to visit anyway. I'll check out Onuma Park if I go there.
