Sumo stables at Tokyo in July 2012/10/25 20:50
Hi

I will visit Japan this summer (July 2-11). Since there will not be any sumo tournament in Tokyo I would like to visit a sumo stable in tokyo for the experience.
Does anyone know whether the stables will be open that period? (Tournament in Nagoya?)

Thanks

The wrestlers will be in Nagoya for a big part of of July for the July tournament, which takes start on July 7. I believe that most of them leave for Nagoya already in late June, so I think you won't be able to visit the Tokyo stables in early July. It should be possible to visit some of the temporary stables in Nagoya, though.

Why don't you just go to Nagoya for one day of the sumo tournament? In general most people arrive around 2pm or so and it finishes at 6pm.

What is your full itinerary? Are you visiting Kyoto/Osaka? It would be easy enough to see Nagoya on the way there/back, you wouldn't even have to stay in Nagoya overnight if you didn't wish to.

That is a great idea! According to my itinerary I will be leaving Tokyo to Osaka on Sunday July 7th (which is the opening day for Nagoya tournament). So I could stop there for the sumo and in the evening I will continue for Osaka.
Do you think it is possible? The biggest problem will be our luggage (2 large ones). Are there any lockers in Nagoya station? If so, can I make reservation of the lockers?

Thanks

Perfect!

Of course!

The biggest problem will be our luggage (2 large ones). Are there any lockers in Nagoya station?

Yes, there are many there in various locations including an entire room full of them.

If so, can I make reservation of the lockers?

No.

You could also ship your luggage ahead to your Osaka Hotel from Tokyo (the day before) if you wish.
