We will be in Japan for 3 weeks, visiting Tokyo, Takayama, Knazawa, Kyoto, Osaca, Hiroshima and back to Tokyo. I would like to ask whether it would be worth buying the JR pass? Many thanks. Chen

In general, yes.
Can you post your full itinerary in detail including which airport you fly into and out of on what exact dates?
If you can fit your "away from Tokyo" time into 14 days then a 14-day JR Pass will pay off.
Depending on what you plan from Tokyo a 21-day JR Pass may pay off although usually a 14-day JR Pass + individual tickets within Tokyo may be slightly cheaper.
Enjoy your trip!

Cost wise, you should squeeze Tokyo to back to Tokyo itinerary within 2 weeks.

Meaning that you should start your 14 days pass the day you leave Tokyo..the 14th day should be the day you return to Tokyo. In Tokyo you could use a Suica card or pay cash fo reach small trip within Tokyo.
