Night trains with JR pass 2012/11/12 05:32
How many night trains are available free when travelling on a JR pass. I will be getting a 21 day pass and intend to use the night trains as part of my accommodation package . Also do you have a list of these trains or know how i can find out which ones have the carpet or seats for overnight travel . I realize some night trains do not.
Also where do i find a comprehensive map of all the trains and areas available to me with this pass. Can i travel on all 5 japan rail carriers? Any first hand info would be very much appreciated
Thank you in advance for all reply's.

Note that availability can be difficult for some of them depending on exact dates.

Can i travel on all 5 japan rail carriers?

No, only JR trains.

Enjoy your trip!

Sorry, your question was ambiguous as there are many rail companies in Japan (eg. Kintetsu, Tokyo Metro, Toei, Tobu, Hankyu, Hanshin etc.)

You can use your 21-day JR Pass across the six JR companies, ie JR West, JR East, JR Central, JR Kyushu, JR Hokkaido, JR Shikoku.

It may be worth mentioning that in some cases JR trains travel over private tracks and the pass does not cover the cost, you will need to pay an additional fare. These are the tracks:

For help with rail schedules, try this site: http://www.hyperdia.com/

All you have to do is input the beginning and end stations and the time you either want to leave or arrive, untick the Nozomi/Mizuno/Hayabusa if you're not headed north from Tokyo, and the site will show you the combinations available. The green icon trains will be JR trains and will be free with the pass for the exception of the aforementioned "special circumstances" where they run on private tracks. The pink icons will be private rail lines and you will have to pay. As long as you untick the Nozomi for all non-Northbound routes from Tokyo, the shinkansen trains will be free. You can use the Hayabusa on the Tohoku Shinkansen with JR East.

Japan Rail has an extensive network in Japan, but it won't take you everywhere you want to go. You will have to pay for private lines sooner or later, so take those fares into account.

I meant to say Mizuho, not Mizuno! I apologize!
