Hi all,
I just wanted to confirm whether trains will be operating, or whether shops will be open, on the 23rd of December as it is marked as a national holiday because of the Empreror's Birthday. I was planning to explore Nara on this day, but now I'm not sure... Thanks!

Yes, trains run as usual.
All shops will be open.
All sightseeing spots in Nara should be open.

In Japan, people like to shop and travel on weekends and holidays. Therefore, shops and sightseeing spots make sure to open during these days. One exception is the New Year period, but most places do not have New Year closures before December 29:
