Hakata to Mt. Aso in one day?

My question is, departing from JR Hakata station with JR Pass, is it possible to go for a trip to Mount Aso in just one day? I mean something like departing at 8 AM from Hakata and coming back at late afternoon from Aso to Hakata, will I have enough time?

Just found that, there's a way to reach Aso in 2 hours, by Shinkansen to Kumamoto and switching to a Limited Express Kyushuu Odan it takes a couple of hours.
But from Aso station does it take a long to take a tour to the crater?
