Land in Osaka (7pm) - Kyoto

So I'm looking at flights from Melbourne to KIX (Osaka), and most flights seem to land in Osaka at around 7pm. Kyoto, however, seems to have cheaper accommodation & I'd rather stay/get there as soon as possible. I guess this brings me to my question:

Would it be possible for me to catch a train from Osaka to Kyoto at around 7pm & still have time to check into my hostel? Or does it sound like a bit much? The public transport system isn't too difficult to navigate, is it? D:

If you land around 7pm, you should be able to catch the 20:16 Haruka that arrives in Kyoto at 21:32:

I am not sure which hostel you will be staying at, but I think a lot of them will allow check-in until at least around 10pm.
