JR Pass 2012/12/7 12:29
Hi,

I have amended my itinerary as below. Shall I buy any JR pass?

As I checked Hyperdia, if single ticket roughly cost me 24,700, whereas JR pass is selling at 28,300. In this case, worth it to have JR Pass?

Day 1: Osaka
Day 2: Osaka - Kanazawa (4620)
Day 3: Kanazawa - Takayama (2520)
Day 4: Takayama - Shirakawago - Takayama
Day 5: Takayama - Tokyo (8510)
Day 6: Tokyo (Hakone Day trip JR Pass+3900)
Day 7: Tokyo
Day 8: Tokyo - Kyoto (7980)
Day 9: Kyoto
Day 10: Kyoto
Day 11: Kyoto (Nara Day trip)
Day 12: Kyoto - Osaka

Thank you

Unless you are determined to take local (slow) trains, you seem to be leaving out the limited express supplement.

For example, the "base fare" for Tokyo to Kyoto is 7980, I admit, but to take the Shinkansen train, you need to pay at least 4,730 yen additionally for limited express supplement.

The guideline is that if you make a Tokyo - Kyoto/Osaka round-trip within a 7-day period (of course using limited express/Shinkansen superexpress), a 7-day JR Pass pays off. Please check the fare again.

I think you sum up only base fare, but not seat fee.

Seat fee is what you need to pay even without seat or unreserved car. It's called LTD Exp surcharge in Japanese.

In short, JR Pass pays off from Day 2 to Day 8.

Day 3: Kanazawa - Takayama (2520)
Day 4: Takayama - Shirakawago - Takayama
Day 5: Takayama - Tokyo (8510)

It makes much more sense, saving you time and money, if you take the bus from Kanazawa to Shirakawago to Takayama. Shirakawago is between Kanazawa and Takayama.

Bus Timetable is here:-
http://www.japan-guide.com/bus/shirakawago.html

We took the 8:45am bus from Kanazawa which arrived at Shirakawago at 10:00am. You can store your luggage in the coin lockers or with the tourist office staff if it won't fit. We then explored Shirakawago for four hours and took the 14:00 bus to Takayama which arrived in Takayama at 14:50. We then checked in to our ryokan and explored the city, then woke up the following day and went to the morning markets, explored more of Takayama and then took the afternoon trains to Tokyo.

As c and AK explain, get a 7-day JR Pass and set the activation date as Day 2 so that it covers you until Day 8 when you take the Shinkansen from Tokyo back to Kyoto.

As already stated your pricing is incorrect.

Enjoy your trip!

Make a "long(semi-order)" one-way ticket(as basic fare) at JR ticket office reccomend.
called "Katamichi-jyosya-ken[片道乗車券]".
long(over 101km) one-way ticket can stop over anytime (cannot route back) effective period.
(route making must with a single stroke of the pen)

so, if KIX(Kansai AP) start
Kansai AP sta to Yamashina(near Kyoto)[関西空港-山科]
via ShinOsaka-Kyoto-[JR Kosei Line]-Kanazawa-Toyama-Takayama-Minoota-Tajimi-Shiojiri-Shinjuku-Tokyo-Nagoya
Total : 16,700Y (except EXP fee) / 9days
