Things we can do while we’re in Kyoto?

Hi!

My girlfriend and I are going to Kyoto in July 2013. July 17th is our arrival date.
Besides the Gion matsuri and Saihoji temple, what are other things we can do while we're there? Any suggestions?

You can also take trips out from Kyoto to Nara, Osaka, Koya etc. if you want to see other places. It's very well situated for a lot of nice day trips.

Kyoto is BOILING in summer! It's much hotter than surrounding regions!
I also suggest getting out of there for at least one or two days.
