18 Day Osaka - Tokyo Trip Advice Appriciated 2013/2/7 06:04
Hello everyone. Long time visitor, first time posting.

I am planning an 18 day Osaka/Tokyo trip for two of my friends and I (2 males, 1 female), this coming April. I previously spent 9 days in Osaka, back in Feb/March 2007, so this will be my second visit, but only the first for my friends. I've already reserved/purchased the airfare and hotel accommodations, and also have an idea of the areas that we'll visit... but as for what routes and how much could be accomplished/combined within a day, that's where I might need some advice. (I'm actually still waiting for Willer Express to open their reservation schedule pass April 7th.)

A little extra info:
The female (in her 20s) of the group simply wants to view cherry blossoms at some point in the trip, and is content on tagging along and doing some fashion shopping.
The two males will be in dedicated search of vintage video games, new & vintage toys/collectibles, sight seeing, souvenirs, and anything fun and/or entertaining.
None of us are into sushi, but we plan on trying all types of food, including that.
I've been on and off with teaching myself the Japanese language, but at this point, I don't know enough for reading and communication, in case anyone was curious.
We are from the USA (east coast).

Current Osaka Plans - Base: Osaka Umeda Station
- Frequent Shinsaibashi-suji/Dotonbori/Amerikamura
- Osaka Castle
- Den-Den Town/Otaroad
- Tenjinbashi-suji and perhaps the Osaka Tenmangu Shrine
- a day trip to Kyoto to visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple and the historic street leading up to it
- lots of roaming and anything else that's possible

Current Tokyo Plans - Base: Ikebukuro Station
- Sunshine City/Ice Cream City
- Nakano Broadway
- Shinjuku Gyoen Park
- Harajuku (Takeshita Dori, shopping at the Oriental Bazaar and Kiddy Land)
- Shibuya Crossing area, Tobacco & Salt Museum
- Akihabara (Chuo Dori, Radio Market, Big Yellow Sign, other shops)(2 days?)
- Ueno
- Ginza
- Asakusa (Shin/Nakamise Shopping streets, Sensoji Temple)
- Maybe a trip to Chiba and/or Machida to hunt down some shops

Listed below is our dated itinerary. I have yet to fill in the dates with the areas that we'll visit, since I didn't want to pigeon-hole specific areas to specific dates just yet, without getting some advice.

So far, I've acquired a lot of information from the travel guides on this site. But it is missing some of the more detailed and pinpoint info that individuals can personally give. Basically, any help with scheduling, recommended must-see or little-known places, and anything else is greatly appreciated.

Yoshino should be high on the list of sites for cherry blossom. There is a sakura festival with colourful parade on Apr 11-12. Even if you can't change the dates, you can still go to Yoshino on Apr 11 and take in the festival as a daytrip from Osaka before taking the overnight bus to Tokyo.

Pro wrestling in Osaka or Tokyo? 2013/2/7 23:49
The Yoshino flower ceremony on April 11th would have been a great addition to our itinerary. Unfortunately, I'm not sure that the 2 hour travel each way, followed closely by an 8 hour bus ride, would work too well. (The other male of the group already "despises" having to sit so much time on the overnight bus.)

But I do see that the Cherry Festival Light Up is scheduled from April 1st-26th, we would definitely be interested in taking a trip there, on one of our earlier days. It'll also give us more time to view the lit cherry blossoms, which start around 6pm.

Thank you so much for the advice. My focus was directed so much to the city limits that I over looked Yoshinoyama.

Do anybody know of any 'pro wrestling' venues/events local to our itinerary, and how one would go about purchasing tickets? I've checked 'New Japan Pro Wrestling's website, in which I found everything besides ticket purchase info. Any pro wrestling organization would work, with a venue that's easy to get to, being best.

Looking it over, I feel that my itinerary is missing some sort of special event or festival to break up the 'urban' side. So far, I haven't been able to find any conventions, festivals, sumo/pro wrestling events, etc... that coincide with the travel dates. I would like for the trip to be a little more than just shopping, shrines, and cherry blossoms. heh

Anyhow, does my itinerary look too cramped or overly city-sided?
And would any of the various train passes be beneficial to our itinerary layout?

You can ask your hotel if they could do it for you. We did. But if you like New Japan Pro Wrestling so much like my husband, one of their biggest event will be on 7th of April. So you might want to reroute your travel.
That's one of the main reason we're going early April. And we got our hotel to booked the tickets for us.

Otherwise you can get it from Ticket Pia. They're around the airport.

Re: 18 Day Osaka - Tokyo Trip Advice Appriciated 2013/3/21 04:26
Thanks n, for the information. I've always wanted to see a Japanese pro wrestling event, and while one of the two scheduled Tokyo NJPW shows (April 5th, April 7th) would have been great, I unfortunately will not arrive in Tokyo until the 12th... my accommodations and travel have already been booked and paid for.

I somehow managed to schedule this trip right outside of many interesting events, including the monthly flea market in Osaka. Well, even if I don't find something non-typical to add within the next 2 weeks, I'm sure that my friends will still have an amazing time.
