Heres some album recomendations:
Dir en grey's new album: Withering to Death. Awesome
Loudness- Thunder in the East. Classic
Metal Safari (just search for them on Google)
hide (pink spider is a great song)
Ritual Carnage-great Japanese thrash band with a American singer
Razors Edge- look for their album, razors rising on interpunk. Awesome hardcore.

I know of one really, really good group, but their out of a podcast only. They're called Kawayan. There are multiple ways to find them. I found them on iTunes by accident, and purposely on Google by looking up the Garage Band Users Club and Kawayan. They have insanely awesome guitarists and are mostly instrumental. They have a few lyrical songs, all of which are quite fun in my oppinion. Happy hunting.

The Candy Spooky Theater are also very good. SpreadBeaver, Gackt-Job, Plastic Tree, Phantasmagoria...

the pillows are the greatest band of all time, not that they're metal.
Does anyone know of any bands that sound like Malice Mizer's Beast of Blood?

Granted I'm not too familiar with many Japanese metal bands, but Sigh is definitely up there. More Avant-Garde than anything, but good if you get past the black metal style vocals.
Never was a fan of Dir En Grey they seem to be the most popular to come out of Japan that hit the USA

I have to admit, this bulletin is full of a lot of bands! Thanks to all who posted this stuff, cause I'm always scouting for new stuff! A lot of the bands that I've heard on here rock! And, I'm really glad somebody mentioned Shonen Knife! They may not be considered "rock", but they are really good! They did a great cover of "Sedated". Thanks all! ^_^

The bands listed are not Japanese metal, or rock. They are Visual Kei bands, which is a different genre. Some famous Japanese metal bands are, Loudness, Vow Wow, Earthshaker, Ezo, Anthem, and Onmyo-Za.
