From March 8 to 17, 2013, the annual Hanatoro illumination event is held in Kyoto's historic Higashiyama District. This popular sightseeing district is usually very quiet after dark, but during the ten day Hanatoro event, which means "flower and light road", the district comes alive with the light of the illuminated storefronts and thousands of lanterns that line the streets. Additionally, several large, illuminated ikebana flower displays are set up across the district from Shorenin to Kiyomizudera Temple.

Virtually all of the popular temples and shrines in the area are illuminated in the evenings and have special extended viewing hours. In addition, live music, dance and street performances are held at stages set up in front of Kodaiji Temple, Maruyama Park and Kiyomizudera Temple.
