Haru Basho 2012 - Day 14

Going into the final day of the Haru Basho all three Sumo Game's divisions are still up for grabs. In Makunouchi, on day 14, WM18 Screechingowl saw his once insurmountable lead disappear into a slight advantage over his nearest rival EM1 Susanoo after a head to head match between the two saw Susanoo on the winning end of things. As a result, Screechingowl with his 12-2 record could take the yusho with a victory on senshuraku, however a loss by Screechingowl and a win by Susanoo would force a playoff between the two. Susanoo holds a single point lead over Screechingowl, 107-106.

In Juryo, the scenario for the title is quite simple as WJ2 Heikotoriki and EJ3 Derosa, co-leaders after fourteen days, will face each other on the final day in a winner-take-all bout.

In Makushita, the yusho chase will also come down to a direct confrontation with the co-leaders as Wm17 Oskanohana will pair up with Em35 Nekotaikai on the final day of the tournament.

Haru Basho 2012 - Day 13

On Day thirteen of the Haru Basho, WM18 Screechingowl got back to his winning ways to improve to 12-1 to keep a two match advantage over EM1 Susanoo and EM12 Flohru. Screechingowl can take the title on day 14 with an additional victory or a loss by both Susanno and Flohru. However, Susanoo will meet Screechingowl on the penultimate day in an important bout with yusho implicatons. Kadoban Ozeki still needs a final shiroboshi in the remaining two days to retain his rank in May.

In Juryo, WJ2 Heikotoriki and EJ3 Derosa both improved to 10-3 and have opened up a two match lead of the rest of the field. In Makushita, there was no change in the leader board as both Wm17 Oskanohana and Em35 Nekotaikai upped their tournament records to 11-2.

Haru Basho 2012 - Day 12

On day twelve of the Haru Basho sole leader WM18 Screechingowl saw his 11 match winning streak come to an end as he was defeated by former Yokozuna Doitsuyama. As a result, EM1 Susanoo, EM8 Nushuzan, EM12 Flohru and EM13 Kyokuhagyo picked up a win against the leader who still maintains a dominate two match cushion over them. Unfortunately, Ozeki hopeful Hokuro fell to 6-6 on the day dashing any hopes of promotion this time around, however, a strong performance in the remaining days would still give him a decent chance to meet the win requirement in May.

In Juryo, WJ2 Heikotoriki and EJ3 Derosa both improved to 9-3 to keep themselves in a position for a shot of the title with EJ4 Fuseigou and EJ5 Mariohana still in contention and one match down at 8-4. In Makushita, Wm17 Oskanohana and EM35 Nekotaikai are co-leaders at 10-2.

Haru Basho 2012 - Day 11

After eleven days of the Haru Basho WM18 Screechingowl continues to his march towards picking up the yusho as he improves to 11-0 while keeping all competitors three matches away. In Juryo, WJ2 Heikotoriki, EJ3 Derosa and EJ5 Mariohana all improved to 8-3 to share the lead while in Makushita, Wm17 Oskanohana, E35 Nekotaikai and Em47 Ayagawa are battling it out for the top of the leader board at 9-2.

Haru Basho 2012 - Day 10

After ten days of the Haru Basho, Makunouchi leader WM18 Screehingowl opened up a huge three match lead over the field as his nearest competitor EM1 Susanoo picked up a third kuroboshi of the tournament to Ozeki Doitsuyama. Screechingowl, barring a complete meltdown seems destined to pick up the yusho but things have been known to get silly down the stretch from time to time. Ozeki hopeful Hokuro got back in the win column on day 10 to improve to 6-4. He now needs to go 4-1 or better in the remaining days to pick up enough wins in consecutive tournaments to get the promotion.

In Juryo, leader at nakabi EJ2 Zenjimoto, has limped into the second week with a two match losing streak allowing WJ2 Heikotoriki, EJ3 Derosa,EM5 Mariohana and EJ6 Zichi a chance to climb back into contention. Zenjimoto will face Heikotoriki in a head to head bout with yusho implications on day eleven. In Makushita, Wm17 Oskanohana is the sole leader at 9-1 with a sizable group of participants nipping at his heels at 8-2.

Haru Basho 2012 - Day 8

At Nakabi of the Haru Basho 2012, WM18 Screechingowl continued his two match dominance over the rest of the Makunouchi division in grand style as he punctuated the days performance with a perfect score. Those still hoping to catch the leader in the second week are EM1 Susanoo, EM8 Nushuzan and EM13 Kyokuhagyo at the second tier of 6-2. In Juryo, EJ2 Zenjimoto continued to set the pace at 7-1 while in Makushita, Wm17 Oskanohana and Em47 Ayagawa emerged as co-leaders at 7-1.

Haru Basho 2012 - Day 7

At the end of the first week of the Haru Basho 2012, WM18 Screechingowl holds a two match lead over the rest of the Makunochi competitors due to a mid-basho fade by EM8 Nushuzan, his nearest rival. Ozeki Randomitsuki is one step closer to removing the kadoban label next to his name while Sekiwake Hokuro is halfway to the ten wins required by him for an Ozeki promotion. Both Randomitsuki and Hokuro join a large group of 5-2 wrestlers that will see significant thinning on Nakabi as several head-to-head bouts are on the slate.

In Juryo, EJ2 Zenjimoto is sole leader at 6-1 with EJ3 Derosa, EJ4 Fuseigou, EJ5 Mariohana and EJ6 Zichi one loss away at 5-2. In Makushita, things have gotten messy again after sole leader Em29 Jejima fell to 6-1 and now joins six others with the same record at the top of the leader board.

Haru Basho 2012 - Days 5 and 6

After six days of the Haru Basho, WM18 Screechingowl finds himself at the top of the leader board and still perfect at 6-0. EM8 Nushuzan is one match off the pace as he picked up his first kuroboshi of the tournament. Both Ozeki Randomitsuki and Sekiwake Hokuro have gotten down to business to achieve their goals and lead a large pack of 4-2 wrestlers that are waiting in the wings for a mid-basho surge in the standings.

In Juryo, EJ2 Zenjimoto saw a five match winning streak come to an end on day six to fall into a three way sharing of the lead along with EJ5 Mariohana and EJ6 Zichi. In Makushita, Em29 Jejima finds himself all alone for the top spot as he remains perfect for the tournament at 6-0.

Haru Basho 2012 - Days 3 and 4

After four days of the Haru basho scoring has been above average at 6.99 with several players already notching a perfect day. Day four saw the lowest scores of the tournament thus far at 6.28 as several of heavy favorites were upset by their opponents. In Makunouchi division, EM1 Susanoo, EM8 Nushuzan, EM13 Kyokuhagyo, WM14 Konosato and WM18 Screechingowl have gotten off to a good start at 4-0 for a share of the early lead. Kadoban Ozeki Randomitsuki is hanging tough at 3-1 while Ozeki hopeful Hokuro is good shape for promotion with the same 3-1 record. In Juryo, EJ2 Zenjimoto and EJ4 Fuseigou are neck and neck for the top position at 4-0. The Makushita division is still a day or two away from forming a solid contenders list with seven members jammed at the top of the leader board.

Haru Basho 2012 - Days 1 and 2

Welcome to the Haru Basho 2012!

It has been two years since the sumo association road-tripped to Osaka due the matching rigging scandal which forced the cancellation of the tournament. Sadly, however, the basho most likely would have been cancelled anyway as a result of the major earthquake and tsunami that rocked the nation on March 11th. Our hearts and prayers continue to go out to the victims of this terrible tragedy. Also, if anyone has some free time, might I suggest heading up to the area for some volunteer work. Things are still quite a mess even though one year has passed and a helping hand is always greatly appreciated.

In Sumo Game for the Haru Basho, we have 148 participating players with five new-comers hoping to eventually make a name for themselves. In Makunouchi, there are several story lines to follow. First off, Ozeki Randomitsuki is kadoban and can get back to being a full-fledged Ozeki with a winning tournament. Also, Sekiwake Hokuro, yusho winner of the Hatsu Basho is in excellent shape for a promotional run to the games second highest rank. At this point Hokuro needs just a 10-5 mark to put together enough wins for the requirement of 31. Good luck to both!
