There are many reasons to visit Hiroshima, western Japanfs largest city, and any trip to Japan will be made more memorable by including the city in your itinerary.

Encircled by the Chugoku Mountains and the Seto Inland Sea, Hiroshima profits both from the beauty of its natural surroundings and the bounty of fresh seafood and vegetables from mountainside farms. The Inland Sea near Hiroshima is also home to about 140 islands, and many travelers take the opportunity to go island-hopping by ferry, a wonderful way to see a side of Japan most people miss.

The climate is generally mild, neither extremely hot or cold, though in the mountains north of the city winter snowfall is heavy enough to support several ski resorts. For those interested in hiking, the region is crisscrossed with little-used trails, and boasts some beautiful destinations, including Sandankyo Gorge and Taishakukyo Valley.

Of course, one of the most important sites within the city itself is the Memorial Peace Park and Peace Museum. In addition to displaying dozens of monuments and memorials to the victims of the atomic bombing, including the stark ruin of the Atomic Bomb Dome, both the Park and the Museum offer ongoing testimony to the horrors of war and a hope for lasting peace throughout the world. Near the Park, excellent shopping, restaurants and hotels are available, along with the historical grounds of Hiroshima Castle and the beautiful Shukkeien Garden, built for the private residence of one of the city's feudal lords.

The magical island of Miyajima, one of Japan's most memorable destinations, is just an hour away by train or car. A ten minute ferry ride will carry you to the island, with its majestic Grand Torii Gate standing in the sea. You could easily spend a whole day here just exploring shrines and temples and poking through the shops and restaurants.

So, let's take a closer look at Hiroshima and some of its attractions. We look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful city, and hope you'll find the information offered here (and our free coupons!) useful while you're in town.
