Do department stores accept credit cards? 2013/7/12 11:34
Mastercard is probably the card I will be using more than any other... do department stores (and 100 yen shops, particularly the Daiso) take mastercard?

Thanks

I know everyone says have cash ready in Japan but the only place I've ever thought to use cash was at a market stall outside a temple.

Everywhere else I could use my credit card- MasterCard without issue. And I know how to shop!

Enjoy your holiday.

Yes, department stores do accept credit cards.
But take cash with you - be warned now!
Note: you cannot withdraw cash with some Mastercards at international ATMs. see
http://www.mastercard.com/jp/personal/jp/cardholderservices/atmlocatio...
I would be interested in knowing what JoJo did in Japan - as you will certainly need cash for many, many things including but not limited to:
Buying train tickets or to top up your SUICA card.
Buying bus tickets in Kyoto.
Paying temple entrance fees.
Paying museum entry fees
At the coin laundry to wash & dry your clothes.
To use coin lockers at the station.
To pay for cable car tickets.
or tram tickets in Hiroshima.
To use vending machines to buy drinks,
At small shops, ramen & other small casual restaurants, yatai street vendors, at traditional shops - including many sushi restaurants & at high end places that observe the cash tradition.
To pay for your hostel bill (as some popular ones in Tokyo don't accept credit cards nor do some traditional Japanese minshuku inns.

Thanks guys!

I do have a Visa for any cash withdrawals I might need, but that notification makes it seem like my mastercard should work anyhow since I'm from Canada...weird...

Also, is the Daiso cash only? It's so big, I would expect it to take credit cards, but who knows...

is the Daiso cash only?

It depends on the shops. You can find which shops accept credit cards using "shop search".

This is only in Japanese, so if you want to know a specific region (like Tokyo), please ask here again.

The D's on the map are store locations. Click on the D and then click 詳細はコチラ. You'll see the visa/mastercard logo if they accept it.

Re: Do department stores accept credit cards? 2013/7/15 11:56
thanks guys!

I can see some in Shinjuku does and Harajuku does too ^^
too bad the one in Shibuya doesn't haha

anyway thanks for the help :)

one more question though, do you happen to know if there is anything like a minimum amount or even an additional charge for payment using credit cards?

here in Indonesia there are lots of such things, especially the minimum amount has to be met before you can pay with a credit card (usually around 10usd) :(

thanks again!
