Most courier services charge the freight cost calculated based on the weight. However, there are two 'weight' - one is actual weight, another is so-called volume weight, and whichever heavier shall be applied for the calculation. Here's DHL web page explaining about the volume weight. http://wap.dhl.com/serv/volweight.htmlIn metric, DHL uses the formula L (cm) * W (cm) * H (cm) / 5,000 = volume weight (kg)

I hope that she had filled a form upon flying out for "unaccompanied baggage," describing them as personal effects, otherwise she will be charged duty for new purchases made as if she bought it mail-order direct from your country.

Consider shipping by Japan Post EMS instead. It tends to be a cheaper than courier services, which are notorious for overcharging on customs fees (DHL especially).
