is it traditional to take off your footwear at the entryway of a room ect.?

It's common to take off your shoes when entering temples, homes and some restaurants. Thankfully it's normally totally obvious by shoes left out the front or the huge shoe rack.

A couple of years ago there was a long post about it.. Many people living in North-America and Europe said that they and their friends ALWAYS took their shoes off when entering their home,the home of a friend, and the home of someone they didn't know too well.
