Totoro DVD collection

Does anyone know if the Japanese DVDs, specifically the Totoro movie DVD can be played outside of Japan in South East Asia? It's expensive so I had like to be sure of it. Anyone who has experience, please share with me.

Many dvd players are region code free now, although they don't state this, if not it can be converted. But many companies are spending more time on blue ray instead now.
you probably have to do some research on the player you have.

The Totoro DVD is Region 2 locked, but the Totoro Blu-Ray is Region A, B and C.

Thanks all for the replies. However I am in Japan now. Can someone please tell me? I have not much time left.
I'm only looking at the DVD. If it's region-locked 2, can it be played at region-free DVD player?

forgot to mention, although you can play it on a region free player, your player and TV must support NTSC color system.
what DVD player do you have.

A few points to note...
Any Ghibli DVDs are quite expensive in Japan!! They all seem to be around 4000 yen!
For example, I can buy Region 4 PAL Ghibli DVDs in Australia for about $20-25, which is about half the price.
As for the region 2 & NTSC, on most multi region DVD players, you can force the output to your own colour system.
e.g. If your normal colour system is PAL, change the system from "auto" to "PAL". Once you do that, even if you have an NTSC DVD in your player, it will output it to the TV in PAL. Otherwise, it will use "auto" and output a Japanese DVD as NTSC, which will not work correctly on a PAL TV.

@Ghibli_fan if you want the official DVD it's region 2 NTSC only, you need to understand that most Ghibli DVD are region coded, so you need a DVD player to support it, either a region 2 NTSC DVD player or region free player with multi color system is needed. about the PS3, I don't have one, but I do know that the first generation PS3, many of them are distributed region free for DVD, and blue ray is coded. If you have the PS3, why not consider a Blue ray version, the actual disc is encoded ABC which should work. you mention you live within Southeast Asia, if i'm correct it should be region 3, but can be pal or NTSC, so it's best to state your actual country. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code

@ Sandy
You example is incorrect, if the DVD player is NTSC you can view it on some TV as black and white or with a messed up colour. putting a NTSC disc in a pal only player, even with the correct region code, the disc is still unplayable.
with a most japan only players it's pure NTSC only, but many international version DVD player do support NTSC playback.
as for the TV, many flatscreen and large normal TV do support multi system.

I'm sorry but my example is correct. The example that I provided is for the original poster who does not live in Japan, and has a non Japanese DVD player(PAL). In this case, many DVD players (but not all) have multi region & multi colour system (both NTSC & PAL)
For example, I have a Pioneer DVD player, and you can select "auto", "PAL" or "NTSC". In Australia I switch from "auto" to "PAL", and I can play any PAL or NTSC DVD on a PAL TV. In Japan where I currently use it, I switch from "auto" to "NTSC", and I can play any PAL or NTSC DVD on an NTSC TV.
The original poster just needs to make sure the DVD player is capable of this.

@ sandy
May be you should state in your post that you have a pal/ntsc player, then your info is correct.
As I have stated most international version especially if you live in a PAL area, NTSC is usually supported.

Dear all, thanks for the contributions. Unfortunately the shop only sell NTSC Region 2 DVDs. Are there any shops that sell different region codes of Totoro or Spirited Away?
I'm quite sure my player is region free. If I can provide the model (which I have asked my family to check, will anyone know if it's region free? Or can I confirm it by searching online?
Is the collection in Japan more special than the ones bought elsewhere? I'm quite sure it does not sell in my country; Singapore. When I look at the back of the DVD, I think it has like special features or something. Though I'm not entirely sure on that.

region free player are unofficially confirmed, especially the PS3 where there could be a penalty for stating this information.
I had a first generation sony DVD player stated as region 3 pure NTSC only, my area is PAL, with my player you can just take the cover off and click on a switch which turns the player to region free, but will not support any disc in the PAL format.
Sony had to pay the penalty and asked to remove this switch and change the circuity.

Regular shops in Japan will only sell NTSC region 2 DVDs. This is normal & expected.
When you get your make & model DVD player & where it was bought (e.g. Singapore), tell us here and I may be able to tell you what it can handle. Also get them to check the back, as it will show the nominal region code.(probably region 3)
You may be better to source it from elsewhere. For example, the DVDs from Japan may have English speech & subtitles (or some may not), but any extra discs would be in Japanese.
