Recently I stayed at a business hotel, and instead of a yukata I was furnished with a shorter, robe-like garment which didn't quite reach my knees. It was very comfortable and had a soft textured/waffled feel. Is this a unquely japanese garment and if so, what is the name for it? I enquired if they had any for sale but the answer was no. Any help in finding the name or where to buy one would be much appreciated.

michael,
A lot of Western style hotels in Japan provide those kind of robes, and being a Japanese traveller, I've never seen them elsewhere except for some hospitals.
I suppose it's an easier-to-handle substitute for the more traditional yukata that are expected to be provided at all ryokans.
I'm sure there's some kind of a name to it in the industry, but I think most locals just call them "those sleepwears in hotels."
By the way, a jimbei is a set of top and bottom.

Thank you for your responses. Yes, it is definitely not a jinbei. It is similar to, but not the garment provided in hospitals which is apparently called a ケアねまき. Searching for 羽衣 and ガーゼねまき returned items which were close but not quite what I want. I found a not so good picture of what I want here, but still do not have a name for it. http://hotel.jp/hotel/1412/review/148311/regards, michael
