Souvenir lacquerware real? 2013/10/13 20:08
Greetings,

I purchased several pieces of lacquerware from stores in Japan on a recent trip. The pieces cost from 3000 yen to 8000 yen. Is this stuff probably real wood, or is it likely to be plastic or something under the lacquer? It's really bugging me. Thanks.

8000 yen Urushi might be a wooden or partly wooden. 3000 yen Urushi is a plastic product.

Didn't it come with a tag of some kind? Although not strictly compulsory, they usually note whether they've used any ウレタン (urethane) or 天然木 (natural wood) or if it's 合成 (partially plastic) or not.

But from a quick internet search, a shop says that an all natural made in Japan product would normally cost "at least" 3000 yen, so although it might depend on the item, the price itself does sound real.

The shop's website tells us other ways to judge if it's real or not, but it might be a bit difficult if you don't know how plastic ones feel like.
