Presents from a Japanese man

What does it mean when a Japanese guy gives a woman some presents such as: a bento box with matching chopsticks, furoshiki, ofuro towels, a handmade purse, a red bracelet, a bell in a bamboo cage, some rice papers, a swing with little statues with traditional clothing (the male figure is with arms wide spread, while the female one is shy and reserved) and a little bag for good luck coins? Someone please enlighten me. Thanks.

There is no meaning I guess. Some Omiyage gifts listed above are typical souvenirs oversea tourists willing to purchase while they are in JP.

I think it just means he wants her to appreciate Japan- those sound like typical souvenir gifts, not personal gifts.

No romantic interest is conveyed through them, right?

Those seems like normal souvenirs to me. My freinds (both men and women) gave me similar gifts. No romance interest, just something cultural so I could remember Japan. So don't think too much into it.

Why is it people automatically assume giving gifts equals some kind of romantic interest.

Because I met him online and 3 months since we begun communicating online, he mailed me the above mentioned presents.

I asked this question because the way things have developed between me and the Japanese guy that I met (online), he expressed romantic interest. He even promised to visit me in my country and if we click in real life, marry each other.
When a Japanese man makes a promise, is it optional whether he keeps his word or not?
