I am trying to whittle down my plans for Akihabara, and I'm hoping someone who has been can help me out. Is there a good reason to go to both Gamers and Animate? Is there something special about each of these stores that makes a visit to both necessary? If not, which would you suggest and why? Thanks!

It depends on what you are looking for, why not visit them both? I would plan at least a full day for akiba alone.
must visits are IMO: k-books, mandarake, asobit and the yellow submarine building.

If you are a manga and anime fan, visit Animate. If you are a game fan, visit Gamers. If you like both anime and games, visit Lammtarra Media World(only the ground floor, upper floors are all porn DVD floors).
