Katsu or ramen in Akihabara? 2014/4/13 21:25
Please recommend good places, clean and have bi-lingual menus. Under 1000 yen is best.

Whats your favorite?

Dish in Akiba...
If you can't find good restaurant, there are 3 restaurants in Yodobashi in front of the station.

I have ate ramen at Koumen in Ueno, I like it. (I can't say that you will like it too.)

Marugo (http://www.bento.com/rev/1379.html ) has decent tonkatsu, although I can't remember the price point exactly.

If you want to explore other cuisines, Misoshiroya (http://www.bento.com/rev/2523.html ) serves traditional-style meals built around miso soup, and Meitenkai (http://www.bento.com/rev/3670.html ) is a good introduction to Japanese curry-rice.

Just look for signs with ƒ‰[ƒƒ“ (ramen) in them. Handy hint - remember SIXY if you can't remember the characters which will help you identify a ramen ya. Don't really need English menu once there - just say shio/shoyu/miso/tonkotsu ramen depending on what you feel like/what the ramen ya has on offer or just press a button, any button ;)

I know between 2000-2008 there was a famous ramen place in the heart of Akihabara and I would think it's still there. You can't miss it because there was always a long line of people. The deluxe ramen bowl included everything but the kitchen sink and included a big juicy piece of stewed pork and a dollop of mentaiko. I was in Akihabara last year but didn't check if it was still there. I only ate there twice because couldn't stand the waiting in line. The place was a hole in the wall and not much room to sit at the counter.

Akihabara used to have the best tempura soba place in Japan, IMO. Way better than at the train stations. It closed down around 2006. It also had my favorite place for a curry/ramen set where you buy the tickets at a machine in front. I checked the place out last year and it has turned into a ramen shop.

If you ask me, all the good eating places are gone.

I can sympathize with the sentiment that the good places have gone... chain restaurants dominate the hubs.

The UDX building also has quite a lot of places to eat. There's a great chinese - gyoza restaurant near Daimaru Peacock near Suehirocho station.

The restaurant floor at Yodobashi is always a good choice

It may be true that most of the good eating places you knew in 2002 are now gone, but in general Tokyo restaurants keep getting better every year. You just have to keep up!

Akihabara in particular is much, much better than it was ten years ago when it comes to restaurants. It used to be a real restaurant desert, and now there are lots of good places to eat.

UDX is less crowded than Yodobashi, easier to get a table.

Food-wise, they're equally great!

How about katsu kare? GoGo Curry is one of my personal favourites. not exactly nice posh type of restaurant but the huge servings is something to experience!

Thank you for all the wonderful replies. I have many places to explore. The chains I have tried have been great. I love mom and pop places too. Lately I have been hitting the restaurant floor in Seibu at Ikebukuro...but thats another thread. o_O

You have LOADS around Akihabara and most with menus in English. Ramen and Katsu is everywhere there. Language shouldn't be a problem as picture menus are everywhere and you can just point down the picture of what you want.
