Japanese train announcements 2014/5/18 22:21
Good day!
I have tried several times to understand what exactly they say when riding trains in Japan, the announcements so to say. There are rather long sentences they say, think it is like "Kyo mo JR goryo kudasai" or something. If you have time, could you please put up the most usual phrases used in trains?

Hello,
It may be "Kyou mo JR wo goriyou itadaki mashite, makotoni arigatou gozaimasu"
means "thank you so much for using JR again today".

ajapaneseboy,
Thank you very much! Sounds exactly like I remember it.

A bit off topic follow up question; I have seen some of these keychain "pods" playing Tokyo train station jingles (chimes). Are there any pods like this playing messages like the above or other train line jingles like shinkansen?

- A set of examples of announcements in a Tokaido Shinkansen train found on YouTube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9GSGO0oIjI

N700A is a subseries of N700 series, which is the newest series of Shinkansen cars on Tokaido and San'yo Shinkansen operated by JR-Central and JR-West.
(Jingles used in Shinkansen trains of JR-East differ in some points.)

When I first came to Japan, a particular phrase used in the subway, "wanman unten" always caught me off guard... then I realised "wanman" was "Japanese English" (I.e. katakana) for one-man.

here a question... i was listening to the youtube version correct.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9GSGO0oIjI

at 1:08 to 1:13, they said "car 1,2,and 3 are for passangers without seat reservations" so i had a JR Pass right i can just hop in car 1,2, and 3 without making a reservations. i thought JR Pass users always have to make a reservations but in another forum they said no, you can just hop on a car for reservations people. this is correct right

Re: Japanese train announcements 2014/5/23 03:48
@SeikoSKO You do not have to make a reservation with the JR pass so you can use any of the non reserved cars. However it does not cost you anything to make a reservation with the Jr pass and guarantees you a seat so if you know you will be on a particular train it makes sense to make one.
