Torn 10,000 yen bill 2014/10/22 07:43
hi...

a rainy morning to all....

i have this problem with my 10,000 yen which i accidentally teared, maybe almost half of the bill was teared.

i'd like to know if the money would still be acceptable??

would it be ok if i just put a tape on the teared part.. (we used to do this back in my country)

need your thoughts on this problem of mine...

thanks ...

I don't know about in Japan, but in Australia fixing notes with tape doesn't count - shops are allowed to deny the bill because it is no longer legal tender (especially if it is such a big bill). But here we can take it to a bank where they will swap it for a new one. You could try taking it to a bank in Japan.

You should bring it to one of the Bank of Japan (which is the central bank who issues bank notes) to have it replaced. It's one of their work to replace old/born bank notes with new ones.

If you have no chance to visit BOJ, you can try other banks, but they may have some standards or regulation whether they can replace it with a new one. They might refuse it - it really up to the regulation of each bank and the condition of your torn note.

Really, you need to go thru all that inconvenience for a torn bill? It's not like you're passing counterfeit currency. I would just put a little tape on the back and try to use it in a ticket machine to recharge my IC card, or failing that, at a combini. After the recipient deposits it the bank it'll eventually be noticed and taken out of circulation. If no one accepts your damaged bill then take to the bank.
