Hi,
my snailmail penpal finished his letter with:
ながい てがみになつて ごめんなさい。
After half an hour of deciphering (my Japanese skill is sadly non-existent and the word/words in the middle puzzled me most), I came to a conclusion, that it means something like "Sorry for the long introduction letter".
Please, can somebody tell me am I right or am I wrong?

Yes, but "introduction" is not there.
word for word, "beg your pardon for such long letter I wrote"
"Sorry for the long letter"
"Thank you for your patience in reading my long letter"

Right mostly maybe but dont know about content "introduction" or not.
"Excuse so many writing(long letter/sentence)" meaning.
(note)
な[つ]て(natsute) is not right
な[っ]て(natte) is right (middle "tsu" is small letter skipping sound)
