What exactly do you mean by "wifi dongle", a USB thing? Don't most laptops have wifi builtin nowadays?

A wifi dongle is just the same a pocket wifi, but you need a power source, ie plugged into a USB power supply (power bank or cigarette lighter USB connector) or a PC.

You could get a pocket wifi or a data sim card instead.

I prefer the latter.

Yes, a few companies still rent usb modems, and they are often a bit cheaper than mobile hotspots. Here's one:

Upon recommandation from Japanese friends, I rented a MiFi with Global Advanced Communication.
The 75Mbps cost JPY 6150 for 9 days.

They deliver to your hotel for no extra cost.

To answer the original question as to whether or not its a good idea to rent a pocket wifi the answer would have to be a resounding YES.

Unless you want to squat hotel lobbies finding truly free wifi is very difficult in Japan. You will see "free wifi" on doors to shops all over the place but when you look closer you will always see that its associated to a phone carrier and if you don't have a phone contract you are screwed. Other places require you register before hand, which also is a total PITA.. RENT A POCKET WIFI. lol..

What country are you from, in some country it will work out cheaper to buy a pocket wifi and a data sim.

for example, a basic huawei pocket wifi from hong kong cost USD 40, and a 7 day 5GB 3G sim usable on softbank network cost USD 26.

the pocket wifi is unlocked and can be used almost in most country.

if you are temp visitor, you can also access 14 days free wifi across japan.

refer to these two links for details.
