I decide to buy the docomo data sim card but I am worried that it would not work on my Samsung S4 and Xperia Z1. Can I rent the emobile or docomo portable wifi on the day of arrival just in case the data sim card would not work on my phone. Does emobile have coverage in ski resort and rural area?

Yes, but they are subject to the availability of the kiosks at the airport. Note that they are generally more expensive to rent at the airport on the day rather than ordering online.
Does emobile have coverage in ski resort and rural area?
Most areas are covered, however ski resorts in particular tend to suffer from dead spots with any carrier, probably mostly due to the terrain or lack of towers.
