Cider in Japan

Hi,
I am wondering if cider is a popular drink in Japan?? And what are the top/leading brands of cider if it is popular.
Also, does Japan have any range of 'flavoured' beers such as chilli, lychee, ginger, etc. - or is this something that Japanese people wouldn't be interested in?
Thanks guys!

In Japan, the alcoholic drink made from apples is not common at all, although you might come across it on occasion. However, there is a very popular Japanese drink called cider.... This drink though is essentially sparkling lemonade; why they call it cider I have no idea... http://tinyurl.com/kcvhbdu

I looked at the wikipedia. I was understanding not a cider(サイダー), and cider(シードル). Cider I drank several times. Located on the galette shop menu of Tokyo. It is a French Brittany shops. http://www.le-bretagne.com/e/cidre.htmlThis cider is sold very well and if fashionable liquor store's Tokyo. Other, sometimes drank cider Japanese production. Cider daily routine you might have sold in convenience stores and supermarkets. http://www.asahibeer.co.jp/cidre/

http://www.asahibeer.co.jp/cidre/Cider daily routine you might have sold in convenience stores and supermarkets. ↑ This is a strange translation. When you have entered the nikka, it had been converted to a daily routine. . nikka in old company name, now nikka has become a part of in the Asahi.

Hi All,
Thanks so much for your replies..
Sorry but to clarify, so the Alcoholic drink cider (such as Strongbow) is not very popular in Japan?
Do you think it's just that there's not a large availability, or that the Japanese just don't like cider?
Thanks for your help!

It's probably a combination of them being neither popular nor really available. I also don't imagine that they would suit the general Japanese palate all that much either.

I likes cider. However, maybe, do not know the cider, or Japanese are not interested a lot. Beer is not considered no life, life without cider is considered. Towards the wine is popular than cider.

It's quite difficult to get authentic alcoholic European cidre in Japan, but I once encountered a couple of them in a cafe in the resort of Nasu, Tochigi-ken. The owner of the cafe gave me a "warning" that I may not like it, and when I did (nice and bitter) she said "Ugh!" I noticed today that one of my favorite bakery cafes in southern Tokyo serves Bretagne cidre (three types: sweet, dry and organic). At least I know their bread is authentic. Unfortunately, I couldn't try the cidre as I still had work to do. But they didn't seem like your everyday Asahi sparkling apple wine. Here's the cafe. Note that they also serve Bretagne buckwheat beer. http://www.palaisdepain.co.jp/cafe/index.htmlI'm sure it's also possible to request for new stock at department stores. The many "Irish pubs" may carry them too.

Hard cider (alcoholic) is called shiidoru (シードル, sometimes spelled "cidre") in Japan. I stopped drinking beer for a medical reason, and switched to hard ciders and sparkling wines (Champagne) for carbonated libations. Anyways, I visited Aomori prefecture (famous for apples) last year, a place called A-Factory (near Aomori station), where they brew their own hard ciders and also you can sample about a dozen hard ciders made in the region. I did sample all they offered, and concluded none of them were any good. http://www.jre-abc.com/wp/afactory/cidlefactory/I heard that in Japan you can buy an American hard cider brand called Angry Orchard. That is much better than any I sampled in Aomori.

As for your question about flavored beer, the liquor laws were amended in April this year to allow additional ingredients to be used in beer flavoring...

There has been a boom in cider consumption in Japan over the past few years - there have been lots of trendy magazine articles, and it's easier to find cider on the menus of cafes. You can also see lots more craft cider on tap in craft-beer bars.

First, thank you Toko Dynamite for mentioning us. We are inCiderJapan, Japan's first and only bilingual magazine dedicated to all things cider: http://www.inCiderJapan.comTo reply to Ringo's comment, Angry Orchard is only one of many imported ciders available in Japan, and we will start importing ciders from San Diego this month. If you have any questions regarding ciders in Japan, whether domestic or imported, please feel free to contact us.
