How to express desire/hope?

Can I ask how this would work? For example I want to say "I hope I receive flowers today."

Is the proper term for hope nozomi or hoshii?

There are different ways, depending on how strong you want to say you "want."

I want some flowers.
- Hana ga hoshii desu.
"hoshii" is simply "I want (something)."

I want to receive (as a gift) flowers today.
- Kyou hana wo moraitai desu.
"morau" = receive, "moraitai" = want to receive.
This "-tai" form is used to say "I want (to...)."

I hope/wish I can receive some flowers today.
- Kyou hana wo moraetara ii desu.
Literally it says "It would be good if I can/could receive flowers."
Here "-tara" form, to express "if I can..."

"nozomu/nozomimasu" (verb) is "to hope," but this would sound s bit too formal for a sentence like this.

In the most cases, you can only use "Hoshii" or "Hoshii-desu"(polite form), or sometimes "Itadakitai(- desu)".

eg; Ohana ga hoshii-desu.
: Ohana ga itadakitaidesu.

They both sound natural.

"Nozomu", or "Nozomi" is too polite in general conversation. "Nozomu" or "Nozomi" can be used only at school in a formal speech.

Perhaps the expression you're looking for is "ii-naa."

"kyou, o-hana o moraetara iinaa."
(Oh, it would be nice if I were sent flowers today.)

This expression is used basically when talking to yourself. It's not asking for any answers.

But more often than not, people use this in front of someone else as if though the speaker is trying to send a message to the person in front of him/her ;)

I was thinking of that one when I was writing my reply, but just wasn't sure how much Japanese the original poster already knew in terms of grammar, so decided to stick to "-desu/masu" form :)

In fact, I was trying to think of a desu/masu version, but couldn't come up with one you'd use when talking to yourself (because you don't try to be polite to yourself!).

But now I think that maybe "iin desu kedo nee" or something might work. But then, for beginners, I'm sure "iinaa" would be easier.
