How to translate Chinese Name to Japanese? 2015/3/14 04:55
Hello, I am visiting Japan and would like to know how to pronounce or translate my Chinese name: 金天植 into Japanese. I realize I can also just use katakana, but I am not sure what is more customary or if it can be translated.

In Chinese:

金 = Gold
天 = Sky, heaven
植 = Plant

Thank you very much!

キム・テンジー(or キム・テンヂー) sound good for you.

There are lots of Korean-Japanese people use their surname as 金(キム).
So make sure you introduce yourself as a Chinese in Japan.

Well, concerning the pronunciation of Chinese characters, there is an usual (not necessarily official, I think) arrangement of reciprocity.
Basically, between Japan and China, personal names (and most of proper nouns) are pronounced in our (their) own way. So, your name is pronounced in Japanese on-yomi of Chinese characters as "Kin Ten-Shoku". And when you write it down, all Japanese will understand the meaning of these very common characters.

On the other hand, between Japan and Korea, the situation is very complicated, politically and mentally.
