informal good lunch/dinner spots in Kyoto

For a couple of dinners we made reservations (Jiki Miyazawa,Shoraian), but all lunch spots are open plus some dinners, we like trying very good food in casual setting, but don't want to spend most of the days "running"and trying to locate places we reserved, more "älong the way".. So will be glad to collect to my list of possibilities, fun places in Kyoto with good food that might be appropriate without reserving in advance, everything will be great, from Unagi specialists to Yakitori, Lively Izakayas, Kaiseki of course.. Your spontaneous go-to places will be great to get info about, thank you :-)

If you're going to Byodo-in in Uji, I can recommend the best ice cream I've ever had in my life, I'd need to look it up though.

2 thumbs up for Uji food (over the river) and 3 thumbs up for the green tea ice cream. Worth eating even when it is below 10 celsius.
