What did Japanese people have on farms? 2015/3/26 07:20
not sure if this is the right place but im doing a little research on what was grown on a farm in Japan pre WW1 and two before things became mechanized. dont be afraid to tell specifics of method of growing and species (type of sweet potato or what ever it is). im also looking in to the animals they had and what they where used for. again species.

I'm sure there's more in-depth books out there but "Just Enough" was a pretty light, enjoyable read that covers some of these topics, since you seem to be asking about Edo period agriculture:

Rice was certainly the staple crop, but lots of other things would have been grown and foraged depending on the area.
Animals were rarely used for labor or food; almost all farmland was put to use growing food for direct human consumption.

thx for the book link. ill look into buying it if i cant get the answers im looking for here. it is just an expense that i wasn't expecting.
