Food quality in department store 2015/4/12 20:48
On our last day in Japan, we intend to go to Abeno Harukas Kintetsu department store. Since we'll only have few hours before leaving to airport, dining in department store would save us a lot of time. The only thing I'm worried about is the food quality of department store restaurant. I'm not expecting it to be fantastic but hoping to be above average. Would that be too much to ask for? I'm thinking shabu shabu for the menu and please tell me if that's a good choice.

Thank you!

The food at Abeno Harukas is generally of high quality. The prices at department stores are generally medium, but as a brandnew flagship, Abeno Harukas tends to be a little bit on the more expensive side. Shabu-shabu restaurants in general tend to be on the more expensive side. Quite a few restaurants in these modern complexes come with a sterile atmosphere which may or may not be appreciated depending on personal preference.

Here is the restaurant list:

There are two shabu-shabu restaurants in Abeno-harukas.

I think both restaurants offer lunch menu which is around 2,000 Yen with pork, beef, veges, soba-noodle and one drink.

Restaurants in department stores are upper-middle or high standards .

So I'll first look at the catalog displayed outside the restaurant and decide whether or not to go. We don't wanna spend lavishly for lunch. I found one shabu shabu/sukiyaki restaurant near Namba station so I'll rather go there if the price is ridiculous in Abeno Harukas.

Thank you Uji :D

Thank you tokyo friend 48 :D

I wanted to try something like this: the one with meat and vegetables put inside the wooden box or something.

Which restaurant would have that among them both in Abeno Harukas?
I see restaurant called Yasaiya Mei has some picture like that but both of the link you gave me (which I very much appreciate) are different ones. See the link here: Yasaiya Mei

Senri shabu-chin http://abenoharukas.d-kintetsu.co.jp/building/restaurant/detail/RID000... offers mini-shabu set http://tabelog.com/imgview/original?id=r2008827890657 around 2,000 Yen. It serves one by one basis which is unusual base of eating "nabe" dish.(Nabe is usually served with 3-4 basis).
I'm nor sure this type of shabu shabu satisfys your need.
Shabu shabu lunch is normally around 2,000 Yen, 4,000 - 5,000 Yen for dinner menu.

Got it! 2000 yen is perfectly fine. I'll see the catalog when I visit there then decide :)

Thank you so much!

In general, if you're stuck for somewhere to eat, or if you just can't be bothered to trawl the neighbouring streets or can't decide what you want, then the top floors of malls, department stores, and large train stations are, imho, fantastically useful places.

There's generally a reasonable variety of food types and price ranges, and the quality is generally good.

Depending on the place you want to eat at, you might have to wait to get a table, but other than that they're a great fallback option.
