Building a Japanese teahouse 2015/5/13 19:37
Hi,
I found a guy in southern England who built his own Japanese tea house about 10 years ago. The weather seems to be a bit like Japan, not too cold during winter.

Living up in north Europe the winters are instead cold and lots of snow might come.

However I wish to build a Japanese teahouse on my lawn, possibly for use all year around.

Are there any Japanese teahouses located in the northern parts of Japan where snow and cold is more common during winter?

Are teahouses usually insulated in those parts?

And maybe there are some kind of blue prints or building instructions in case using insulation, Japanese language is fine.

There are many of tea houses(called "Cha-shitsu") in snowy part of Japan where winter season is very cold.
Cha-shitsu normally settled in inside house or a shelter house which is something like an independent small hut just outside the house to invite special guests.

I think building a Cha-shitsu is an extremely difficult even though you live in Japan and high cost can be incurred.
Some Cha-shitsu blueprints are here.

It wouldn't have to be really serious, I just wish to have a Japanese inspired building, tatami matted if possible.

This seems quite okay, though no tatami mats. Not sure how tatami mats handle climates outside of Japan however.

*Tatami mat
*Tokonoma alcove
*Kakejiku scroll(settled in Tokonoma)
*Flower vase(settled in Tokonoma)

* Hishaku ladle

Shoji paper blinds is also nice to have.

I'm not sure you can obtain Tatami mat or alternative in your country or near by.

Tatami mats, shojis, and traditional Japanese furniture are available in Western Europe and North-America...and there are a few companies in each of these areas that can build a Japanese style tea house..

However in most countries in the Western world, unless the tea-house is very small, like a tool shed, you might need a building permit..especially if you have to build a barn or ...to protect the tea-house from snow etc.
