Earthquake! What to do? 2015/5/21 11:53
I have lived through tornadoes and hurricaines, floods and drought. But I have never been in an earthquake.

I have read that Japan is overdue for a major quake .....many experts predicting within the next 2 years.

What does one do in an earthquake ? As a traveler wht would we do if a major quake hits while visiting? I realize this might be a one in a million chance , but with my entire family (kids included) I would like to have some idea what to excpect and how to handle major quake?

I remember the terrible spot many tourists were in during hurricaine Andrew in Florida (not to mention the natives!)

During an Earthquake

If you're indoors, stay there. Get under -- and hold onto --a desk or table, or stand against an interior wall. Stay clear of exterior walls, glass, heavy furniture, fireplaces and appliances. The kitchen is a particularly dangerous spot. If youfre in an office building, stay away from windows and outside walls and do not use the elevator.

If you're outside, get into the open. Stay clear of buildings, power lines or anything else that could fall on you.

If you're driving, move the car out of traffic and stop. Avoid parking under or on bridges or overpasses. Try to get clear of trees, light posts, signs and power lines. When you resume driving, watch out for road hazards.

If you're in a mountainous area, beware of the potential for landslides. Likewise, if you're near the ocean, be aware that tsunamis are associated with large earthquakes. Get to high ground.

If youfre in a crowded public place, avoid panicking and do not rush for the exit. Stay low and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms. Hope this ideas will help you.

Japan is a very long country with many different regions that are more or less prone to earthquakes. Different parts of the country get hit by strong earthquakes every few years. The strongest in recorded history just occurred four years ago. The statement "Japan is overdue for a major quake" is sensationalist nonsense!

And the statement "many experts predicting within the next 2 years" is even worse. I am following earthquake related news very closely and have never heard a single expert make such a statement.

It is true, though, that the probability of a major earthquake to occur within the next 30 years is pretty high for several areas of Japan, especially along the Pacific coast from Tokyo to Shikoku. It could happen today or in 100 years from now.
