As far as I know, if you got married under the UK law, your marriage needs to be resolved according to the UK law.
Since you say "dependent," I take it she is not Japanese? If she is Japanese, and the two of you have been living for many many years in Japan, there is a remote chance that it can be dissolved according to the Japanese law (as you are considered pretty much "established your life" in Japan), but if not, UK marriages need to be dissolved through the UK law.

Your wife's nationality is unknown. From your text, she seems to be non-Japanese. If she is Japanese, you can divorce in Japan ,which I did. I'm Japanese and my ex is English and we married in UK. After we moved to Japan, we divorced by Japanese law. Since we both agreed to divorce, we submitted required documents to "kuyakusho" and that was the end of our divorce. It was simple and easy and we didn't even use any lawyer's assistance. I don't know whether my ex had to do anything for British side of law. If your wife is not Japanese, I don't think you can divorce in this country. If you are not sure, you'd better consult with your embassy here.
