Satisfying your sweet tooth in Japan 2015/10/30 15:39
I'm headed for my third trek to Japan this November, and if there's something I'm looking forward to, it's finding delicious sweets and desserts. Crepes, parfaits, bakeries, you name it, I love it. Doesn't have to be fancy, just has to be fun and tasty (for example, I collect Mister Donut paraphernalia).

So what kind of dessert or sweet tickles your taste buds in Japan, and what's the best example?

I really enjoyed Karafuneya in Kyoto for the atmosphere and giant parfait display:

I want to try something totally delicious and extraordinary. I'll be in Nagasaki, Fukuoka, Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo next month, so bonus points for desserts in those areas. But I still want to hear about it even if it isn't!

Next to the Gyoza Stadium in Ikebukuro (http://www.bento.com/rev/2159.html ) is an ice-cream shop with fifty different flavors, including weird flavors like beef tongue and Indian curry. You get to try six mini-scoops at a time, so you can go wild with your choices.

It's well worth a try!

I know of this Ikebukuro shop.
They apparently have even Horseflesh flavour Ice-cream.

As a fictional character from japan once said, "Anything exceedingly outlandish can be explained by, 'This is japan'"

Nagasaki

Casu-doce(カスドース)

Casu is from Castella, Japanese sponge cake

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castella

while doce means "sweat" in Portuguese.

Keiran-somen (鶏卵素麺)

The above site explains that in Kyoto, but the original is thought to be in Nagasaki, which is the only place for import/export in the seclusion period of Edo era. It goes from Hirado, Nagasaki to Hakata, Fukuoka.

These two sweats are extremely sweat, so not for everyone, but these are very traditional sweats under the influence of Europe.

Umami Dearest: Oh!! I was thinking about visiting the Sunshine City area while I'm in Tokyo at the end of my trip - I definitely want to go here now! Thanks!!

Debarun: Wise words from that character; that's why we love Japan!

frog1954: Oh boy, there aren't many sweets too sweet for me! That Peach castella on the wikipedia page looks so cute and delicious! It also seems like a great omiyage! Last time in Japan I stayed at a ryokan ran by a super sweet family and took them momijimanju from Miyajima. This time I will take them castella!

aoicotori: Thank you for the info!! I will definitely visit bunmeido; I have starred it on my Nagasaki travel map. As for the other cities, I will star them and visit as we travel around. I especially want to try some tasty matcha ice cream. I had it in a parfait on my last trip and must have it again!
