Hokkaido green plant question

Hi,
When visiting the area around Sapporo (mostly Noboribetsu) I remember seeing the long leaves of a plant that looked quite extraordinary to me.

The leaves were mostly green with some beige parts. I took a few pictures of these, one from late May some years ago and one from late June.

I suppose the beige part is withered parts of the leaves though but if someone knows the name, please let me know.
