Looking for an Electronic Dictionary 2016/7/7 23:12
I don't really care about cost, but I'd prefer to stay around/under $500.

I'm using this for study and hope it will get me through N3-N1. Kanji input is a must. I'm not a fan of the Canon - bought mine 10 years ago and never really used it. Just feels really clunky (UI and physically)

I was thinking of a Casio exword. Ideally I'd like to have some functions in English, but I wouldn't mind if it didn't, because that's just more learning haha

http://www.e-casio.co.jp/shop/g/gXD-SU5300_C_sa/ This one is specifically for learners of Japanese and has N2 and N1 components (not entirely sure what though) but I'm not sure how many English it has or if theres kanji input (it looks like theres kanji practice)

http://www.e-casio.co.jp/shop/g/gXD-Y4800BU/ This looks to be more learning English focussed (but if it still helps learn Japanese I'm all for it! Plus, it has Little Charo~) It looks like it has some Japanese literature on it, which could be really cool.

My friend (an older Japanese lady) has a casio exword data plus 7 (xd-n4800) but that doesn't seem to be sold on amazonjp anymore... (This may possibly be the update? https://www.amazon.co.jp/CASIO-%E3%82%AB%E3%82%B7%E3%82%AA-%E9%9B%BB%E... or https://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%82%AB%E3%82%B7%E3%82%AA%E8%A8%88%E7%AE%97... - unfortunately I can't really understand what their features are, getting only an idea with translations) It seemed easy enough to use, the short time I got to muck around with it. If anyone knows of anything with features like it, let me know!

Any suggestions? (Please don't say 'use a smartphone' - I don't feel like I'm studying when I'm on my phone and I use my data for a variety of other things and it just looks better at work. I have plenty of apps and just don't use them) Thank you!

But you can get offline dictionary apps. No data issue.... Takoboto is good. And free.

I don't feel like I'm studying when I'm on my phone

That's okay; looking up words in a dictionary is not studying.

Guest, doesn't change the fact I don't feel like I'm studying on my phone. Like I said, I have apps and just don't use them. It's not my thing.

Firas, that's true. But learning new words is a part of studying, as is understanding how they fit into sentences, both of which can be achieved with an electronic dictionary.

If anyone has anything helpful to add, I'd appreciate that.

Jeez Firas....

Anyway, if money is no object I recommend looking at the higher end models in Sharp's Brain series. Some quite good stuff there.

But by far the best bang for your buck will be had by picking up a second hand Nintendo DS Lite and a used copy of Kanji Sonomana Rakubiki Jiten. Small, light-weight, large screen for drawing kanji, excellent kanji recognition ability, and can be had for a song.

Thank you! I looked at the Sharps briefly but didn't hear much about them, so I'll go give them a second look! Awesome, I'll look into the DS/game as well - thanks for the advice :)
