If you on dependent status of residence and trying to work, you have to apply for permission to engage in activity other than that permitted.

With this permission, if approved, you will be able to work PART TIME up to 28 hours per week.

If you want to work more than that or full time employment, then you need to apply for change of residence status . However, to do that you must first have job offer and company/employer to support/guarantee your change of status.

If you do have the permit to do 28 hours per week, moving to a work visa is a change of status (as pointed out).

There is another nice issue in this for you too. You (normally) cannot change your status until you get a job (for the visa application), but you cannot start working full time until the visa is processed and that can take several weeks. Makes the transition tricky. (I asked this question of my lawyer a couple of months back.)
